One should never have to fear going to work. It's a sad reality that some people are harassed and attacked at the workplace. Employers should do everything they can to protect their employees, but unfortunately, they sometimes look the other way. Allstar Fitness has gotten into hot water for allegedly doing that.
The Washington-based company has agreed to pay a Latina worker a $150,000 settlement to conclude a sexual harassment and retaliation lawsuit.
The custodial worker says she was raped on numerous occasions by her immediate supervisor when she worked at two Allstar Fitness locations, according to Komo News. She says that when she attempted to report it higher up the chain of command, her immediate supervisor had her fired.
In addition to paying the woman $150,000, Allstar Fitness also agreed to implement new policies regarding sexual harassment training. It was also stipulated that its policies would be offered in each employee's primary language, to avoid any confusion.
Wherever one works, it's good to know what sexual harassment and retaliation policies are in place. Checking on the policies with Human Resources may be a good idea, even if no harassment is encountered. It's especially important to seek assistance if you feel your rights have been violated in any way.
An attorney with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission who is familiar with the case says Allstar did not live up to its obligations to protect its employees. According to Komo News, she says, "They should have known better."
