Hollywood is not short on big paydays. A woman who formerly worked as an assistant to the stars got one of her own in the form of a $3 million award for a sexual harassment lawsuit late last week.
The woman says producer Jon Peters, who produced movies like "Superman Returns" and "Flashdance," sexually harassed her and created a hostile work environment. She says she did well and had a good reputation working for stars like Jennifer Aniston and Marisa Tomei, but had trouble finding work after filing her lawsuit. According to the Hollywood Reporter, she says the producer exerted his influence so she wouldn't get hired.
In her lawsuit, which was filed in 2006, she says Peters got into bed with her on a business trip; dropped his pants in front of her; gave her a hug while naked; and made suggestive comments and rubbed her thighs while she tried to do business.
Peters, the former boyfriend of Barbra Streisand, has been sued for sexual harassment before. In 2007, a maid accused him of trying to grope her and push her onto a bed while he had no clothes on. The following year, a male co-worker accused him of touching him and himself. In addition, a couple who used to work as servants at his home claimed they were terminated when the wife would not get an abortion after becoming pregnant.
In its verdict last week, jurors awarded the woman $822,000 in damages and back pay, plus $2.5 million in punitive damages.
Peters' other credits include "The Color Purple" and "Batman." He was also apparently the inspiration for the film "Shampoo" after working as a hairdresser.
He plans to appeal the verdict, according to reports.
