Unfortunately, sexual harassment occurs in just about every type of work setting. It can happen in traditional offices, in restaurants and anywhere else. Hair salons are no exception.
A hairdresser at a SoHo hair salon is saying she was sexually harassed at work, and now she's filing a $16 million lawsuit for alleged harassment and retaliation. She also says she was subjected to a hostile work environment and that her co-workers made her feel like "garbage."
According to the New York Daily News, the woman worked at Devachan since January 2005. She says a co-worker complimented her on her eyes, offered to buy her things and eventually touched her buttocks. She was apparently told to ignore him, but that became nearly impossible when they were assigned neighboring salon chairs.
The woman's lawsuit also claims that her manager, a part-owner of the salon, tried to kiss her at one point, stroked her upper arm and made inappropriate sexual remarks in front of other people.
He allegedly promoted her and moved her to a different salon, away from the other employee. However, when she started dating a different co-worker, he apparently asked her to break up with him. When she didn't, he only assigned her three clients a day instead of the usual 10, resulting in a drop in income, she claims. When she accused him of sexual harassment in January 2010, she says she was fired.
The Daily News reports that the salon is a trendy spot on Broome Street that specializes in curly hair. Cuts can cost up to $300.
